Seeking Refuge

Psalm 57

David is known for his devotion to God. In this passage, we see him struggling with sin, seeking refuge in a cave, yet remaining under God's protection (Psalm 57). Though he was a king, David recognized there was a King greater than himself. He understood his failures and was willing to endure the consequences of his choices, yet he never stopped pursuing God. He longed for God's presence and continued to worship and praise Him regardless of his circumstances.

We all face difficult seasons. I remember a time when I battled depression and felt increasingly distant from God. Like David, I became focused on my pain and circumstances. I longed to feel close to God again, but I thought I needed to fix myself before I could come to Him. 

In reality, I had forgotten how to simply sit in His presence, praise Him, and trust Him in the middle of my struggle.

David never stopped bringing his needs before the Lord. He approached God with honesty and humility, whether he was experiencing heartache, fear, or the consequences of his own sin. He continually sought God's forgiveness, protection, and will for his life.

When we turn our focus toward God, we find hope, peace, joy, and strength in the midst of our struggles. Scripture reminds us, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). God invites us to come to Him as we are—not after we have everything figured out. He meets us in our pain and teaches us to trust Him through it.

Unlike David, who often faced his struggles alone, we are called to walk in community. I encourage you to confess your hurts, struggles, and sins to the Lord and to trusted believers around you. As you shift your focus from your circumstances to God's truth, He will continue His work in your life. As Romans 8:28 reminds us, “For those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
