Treasured Truth

Psalm 119

Fun fact: did you know Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible? If you haven’t read it before, you probably started realizing that halfway through! It is divided into 22 sections that correspond with the Hebrew alphabet, with eight verses in each section. Every part of the chapter points back to one central theme: the importance of knowing, loving, and obeying God’s Word.

It didn’t take long for me to notice how overwhelming that theme is. Verse 9 asks, “How can a young man keep his way pure?” and immediately answers, “By keeping it according to Your word.” Verse 11 says, “Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” The psalmist understood that purity and obedience don’t come from trying harder; they come from knowing and applying God’s truth.

Verse 24 says, “Your testimonies are also my delight; they are my counselors.” How often do we seek advice from everyone else before seeking the One true Counselor? We search for answers from friends, social media, books, and podcasts, yet God has already given us His wisdom through His Word.

One of my favorite verses is Psalm 119:89: “Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.” In a world where opinions, values, and circumstances constantly change, God’s truth remains unshaken. His faithfulness continues through every generation.

The psalmist goes on to say, “How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (vv. 103-104). That is such a challenge for me. Do I truly crave God’s Word like that? Do I see it as something sweet and life-giving, or merely another task on my to-do list?

Psalm 119 ultimately points us to Jesus. As John 14:6 reminds us, He is “the way, the truth, and the life.” The more we seek Him through His Word, the more our hearts, desires, and lives align with His. Let us be people who treasure His Word, delight in His truth, and follow His ways.
