The Secret Ingredient

Leviticus 5-10

What happens when you read a recipe book? Do you feel inspired—or overwhelmed by all the steps? Maybe even a little annoyed when someone tells you how something should be done. Food has a way of stirring emotions. It’s universal, primal, and essential to life. How we think about food often reveals what’s going on in our hearts.

At first glance, Leviticus 1–7 can feel like a recipe book for fixing our relationship with God. If I’m honest, I know myself well enough to say I would have taken that idea too far. I tend to think I need to do something for God—to try harder, be better, or offer something worthy enough to earn forgiveness. But Scripture quickly dismantles that thinking.

Leviticus 17:11 tells us that life is in the blood, and that atonement comes only through it. My best efforts will never be enough. God was never after my performance—He has always been after my heart.

David understood this when he wrote, “You will not delight in sacrifice…The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise” (Psalm 51:16–17). Ultimately, God removed the burden of sacrifice from our hands entirely. We could never get it right. Only He could offer the perfect sacrifice.

That sacrifice was Jesus Christ. His blood atoned for every sin—once and for all.
What relief.
What grace.

His blood is the true and final “secret ingredient,” bringing life everlasting to all who trust in Him.
