The Giver

Ezekiel 8:9-10
Ezekiel 8:9-10 “Go in,” he said, “and see the wicked and detestable sins they are committing in there!”10 So I went in and saw the walls covered with engravings of all kinds of crawling animals and detestable creatures. I also saw the various idols worshiped by the people of Israel.
The topic of idolatry feels like something out of a history book. It seems like it should be something that died out a long time ago… somewhere around the time of the invention of the wheel. Or at least the printing press!
However, when you define it, it simply means to replace God with something else. More specifically, it’s making that “something else” more important to you than even your Heavenly Father.
Now, none of us do that intentionally.
It’s simply something that happens over time through a series of events and life choices. We make the pursuit of success or money our primary focus. We make getting the perfect grades our primary focus. We turn food or alcohol into an idol hoping it makes us feel a certain way. We can even take really good things like a spouse and turn them into an idol.
But, do you know what happens? None of it will work!
Those things weren’t meant to replace God in our lives and when we try to force them to, they let us down and we let ourselves down.
So what’s the answer? We understand that every good thing in this life… it’s all a gift from God and it’s all connected to God.
The gift can’t replace the Giver. Rather, it points us to the Giver and reminds us just how good He really is…
