The Final Word

Jeremiah 50-52
The situation looked bleak—almost hopeless. God’s people had been carried away, their city destroyed, and their temple burned. From the outside, it could have looked like God had forgotten His people.
But Jeremiah 50–52 reminds us that God had not overlooked them. Babylon may have been the instrument God used to discipline Judah, but Babylon was never beyond His authority or judgment.
God saw what happened to His people, and He would hold their captors accountable.
There is something powerful about that truth. God does not ignore injustice simply because His people have experienced His discipline. Babylon would eventually face the consequences of its pride, cruelty, and violence. The Lord says, “I will repay Babylon” (Jeremiah 51:24).
Israel was not forgotten, and their suffering was not invisible to God. His timing was different from what they expected, but His justice was certain.
The Lord did not excuse Babylon’s evil simply because He had allowed them to conquer His people. He saw the violence, the destruction, and the pride with which they treated those He had chosen. And when the time came, God Himself promised to repay them for what they had done.
Babylon would not have the final word over God’s people—the Lord would. The destruction they had brought upon others would eventually come upon them, because the God who disciplines His people is also the God who defends His people and repays those who do evil against them. In the end, it is not Babylon, our circumstances, or our enemies who have the final word—it is the Lord.
