Test Me

Malachi
In chapter 3, beginning in verse 7, we read that the Lord is reminding His people that they have continually turned away from Him. Yet, even after generations of rebellion, God says, “Return to Me, and I will return to you.”
Then, in verse 10, we see something truly astounding. The Lord actually invites Israel to test Him—and He does so in regard to their giving. He tells them to bring the full tenth into the storehouse, and then says, “Test Me in this way.” And what does He promise? That He will open the floodgates of heaven and pour out blessing upon them without measure.
It would be easy to read this passage and conclude, “If I am generous, God will bless me.” And there is certainly a principle here of trusting God with our generosity. But I think there is something even bigger happening in this passage.
After generations of turning their backs on Yahweh, God is still committed to His people—and committed to His promises. He tells them, Return to Me, and I will return to you. And then He goes even further: “Test Me.” God is essentially saying, “Trust Me. See if I will not do what I have promised to do.”
What a faithful God. A God who keeps His promises—even to people who have repeatedly failed to keep theirs. His faithfulness is not dependent upon our perfection. He is faithful because He is faithful.
So what does that mean for us?
Is there an area of your life that you are keeping close to the chest, thinking, “I’ve got this”? Or maybe it goes even deeper: “I haven’t seen the results I wanted to see, so I’m not sure I completely trust God with this.”
Take some time to reflect on this passage. Look at the faithfulness of God toward His people—even after generations of turning away from Him. And remember that the same God who kept His promises to Israel is worthy of your trust today.
He knows you. He has plans for you. He has not forgotten you. You can trust Him.
