The Shepherd's Care

Psalm 23

A shepherd is someone who tends, guides, and protects a flock of sheep. Because sheep are defenseless against predators and prone to wandering, a shepherd's job requires constant attention and care. A shepherd is more than a caretaker—he is a companion, protector, and provider for his flock.

In the same way, the Lord is that constant Companion, Protector, and Provider. He is with us 24/7.

Jesus said in John 10:10b-11, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” The Lord says, “I am the GOOD SHEPHERD WE NEED 24/7.” 

I don't know about you, but I can find myself wandering, getting off track, and/or just BUSY. Sometimes the Lord has to stop me in my tracks and remind me of His presence. Psalm 23:2 says, “He makes me lie down” but not only lie down, but lie down in green pastures. I am to stop and count my blessings.

Life is not always green pastures. 

There will be valleys. Psalm 23 reminds us that we will walk through “the valley of the shadow of death,” but we do not have to fear because our Good Shepherd is with us. He prepares a table before us, anoints our heads with oil, and fills our cups again and again.

When struggles surround you and conflict presses in, remember the final promise of Psalm 23: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

The chapter concludes with the assurance that God's goodness, mercy, and grace are always pursuing us, bringing everlasting peace and security now and for all eternity.
