Pursuing Jesus

Proverbs 8:32-36
I’m sure most of us have heard the phrase “the pursuit of happiness” and have formed our own ideas about what it means. When Thomas Jefferson used the phrase, he was referring to the pursuit of a meaningful life—a life that gives a person a sense of purpose and satisfaction. Today, many associate happiness with pleasure, comfort, good fortune, or blessings. What we often fail to realize is that not all blessings come from pleasant circumstances. Some blessings come through pain and suffering. In fact, the greatest blessing a Christian could ever receive was provided through Jesus’ immense suffering on the cross.
Proverbs 8:32-36 speaks of being blessed by listening, hearing, watching, waiting, finding, and obtaining. These actions all point to pursuing the Lord, longing for His wisdom, and seeking His Word. We are blessed when we keep His ways, even when those ways are rejected by the world. We are called to listen to His instruction, but we only truly hear it when we open our hearts to understand and receive it so that it transforms us.
Jesus often spoke of those who have “ears to hear.” Hearing is more than simply listening; it is responding to God’s truth in faith and obedience. His Word bears fruit when we take it seriously and pursue understanding. Blessedness comes when we seek God daily, watching, waiting, and remaining faithful through trials, temptations, and persecution. As Jesus said, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:10).

Everything in this passage points to heart work. It requires commitment and a willingness to endure the difficulties of this world for the glory of our Lord and Savior. We are called to seek Him diligently, not neglecting Him when life becomes hard or when our path takes an unexpected turn. Instead, those moments should drive us closer to Him through prayer, worship, and His Word.
When we are “watching daily at [His] gates, waiting beside [His] doors” (v. 34), we are guarding our hearts against the enemy’s lies and schemes. We protect our hearts with the wisdom found in Scripture.
The only pursuit in this life that truly matters is the pursuit of Jesus. “For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord” (v. 35). To pursue the blessings of the Father, we must pursue the Son and His Word.
