2 Chronicles 34

What do you do when you don’t know what to do? Most of us simply keep going, repeating our routines as if on autopilot. Days blend together, and “normal” starts to feel safe even when it’s not good. Sometimes change is needed; sometimes faithfulness is as well. For the one lost in sin, change brings life. For the one walking closely with the Lord, holding fast brings strength.

Josiah faced this same question. After decades of idolatry and wickedness in Judah, he saw the desperate need for revival. Then something remarkable happened—the Book of the Law was found in the temple, the very Word of God that had been forgotten. It shined a light into the nation’s darkness and revealed what sin had blinded them to. That same Word is still our guide today—our anchor in the storm, our light on the path, and the steady voice calling us home.

For eighteen years, even Josiah was caught in the patterns of what seemed “normal.” But when God’s Word was opened, it changed everything. Convicted by its truth (Romans 7:7–8), he tore down idols, purified the land, and led the people back into covenant with God (2 Chronicles 34:31-33).

The power of Scripture transformed not only a king but an entire nation.
So what do you do when you don’t know what to do? Look to God’s Word

It speaks to confusion and lifts us out of spiritual autopilot. It gives direction when the way forward seems uncertain. But Josiah’s story also carries a warning—later in life, pride led him to ignore God’s command, and his disobedience ended his reign at Megiddo (2 Chronicles 35:20–24). Even a faithful heart must stay humble before God’s truth.

Yet in that same valley, prophecy looks ahead to the return of the true King—Jesus Christ, the living Word. He will rule in victory and peace forever. And in that day, we will never again wonder what to do, for we will know Truth Himself and dwell in the radiant light of His glory.

Reflection: Where in your life do you need to return to God’s Word before taking your next step?
