Aligned Desires

1 Kings 3-4

When God appeared to Solomon in a dream and asked what he wanted, it was an incredibly open-ended question. Most of us could come up with a long list—health, security, freedom from pain, the ability to enjoy life without limits. Solomon could have asked for any of it.
But he didn’t.
Instead, he asked for an understanding heart—to discern between good and evil and to lead God’s people well. That response pleased the Lord. Solomon wasn’t chasing personal gain; he was seeking what honored God and served others. In return, God gave him unmatched wisdom—and added blessings he never even asked for, including riches and honor.
Then comes the condition: if Solomon continued to walk in God’s ways, his life would be sustained (1 Kings 3:14).
It echoes the truth of Psalm 37:4, a verse often misunderstood. “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart” doesn’t mean God fulfills every personal wish. It means that when we truly delight in Him, our desires begin to align with His.
That’s what we see in Solomon. He didn’t suppress his desires—his desires were transformed.
What he wanted most was what God valued most.
And that’s the key for us: the only way to desire what delights the Lord is to pursue Him wholeheartedly through His Word.
